Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province, a national center city, a mega city and the seat of the Southern Theater Command. It is positioned by the State Council as an international metropolis, an international trade center, an international comprehensive transportation hub, a national comprehensive gateway city, and a national historical and cultural city. Since the Qin Dynasty, Guangzhou has been the political, military, economic, cultural and scientific and educational center of South China. Guangzhou has been the main port of the Maritime Silk Road since the 3rd century and 30th century, the first largest port in China during the Tang and Song dynasties, and the only major port for foreign trade in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Guangzhou is ranked as a first-tier city by GaWC, one of the most authoritative world city research organizations in the world; it has been ranked as the first best business city in mainland China by Forbes for five times. Guangzhou's headquarters economy development capacity ranks among the top three in China, with 27,000 foreign enterprises investing in Guangzhou; 288 of the world's top 500 enterprises, 120 of which have their headquarters or regional headquarters in Guangzhou. There are more than 3,000 Internet enterprises in Guangzhou, giving birth to WeChat, Vipshop, YY Voice, Cool Dog Music, NetEase, UC Browser and so on. Guangzhou's tertiary industry accounts for 68.56% of GDP.

Guangzhou has 82 colleges and universities with a total of 1,139,600 college students, the highest number in China; it has 97% of the province's national key disciplines, 70% of the province's scientific and technological personnel and 95% of the province's PhDs; and it ranks first in the province in terms of the number of key laboratories at all levels.
